The Northern Territory  was administered by the State of South Australia until it was placed under federal government control in 1911. Darwin, the capital, is a modern city whose links with Indonesia and Papua New Guinea echo trade and migration patterns. Alice Springs is the main town of Central Australia. Southwest of "Alice" is the red heart: Ayers Rock or Uluru.
